What are you making this pancake day?
February 16th, 2012

Whether it is the daunting task of flipping your pancake in one piece that’s got you excited or their mouth watering aroma, Pancake Day is certainly a day very few of us forget. And who can blame you?
Drizzled in maple syrup, chocolate or sugar, making pancakes is just as fun as eating them (if you can get your scales to forget all the naughty calories you’re consuming that is!).
And this got us thinking…
What kind of weird and interesting toppings do you love to put on your pancakes?
Sure you have got your traditional toppings of chocolate spread (wrap your pancake up and you have got your very own crepe), lemon/orange and sugar and crushed berries – but what else makes your pancake filling list?
Top 5 ‘unusual’ pancake toppings?
- Gravy – yes you read this right. My father-in-law loves topping his pancakes with a bit of gravy, and its no surprise really as pancake batter can also be used to make Yorkshire puddings (which might explain why he likes putting ice cream on his Yorkshire puds too…)
- Spinach, ham and cheese – pancakes don’t always have to be sweet. In fact, they are pretty tasty with savoury toppings too. Try this yummy savoury combo – bacon and cheese mixed into your pancake.
- Butter – before you panic we are not suggesting butter on its own but blending softened butter with dates and walnuts, dried apricots and pecans or honey and macadamia nuts is pleasantly delicious.
- Marmalade – okay this one is not so unusual, but we couldn’t resist mentioning it as the Marmalade Festival starts the 25th February and for £12 you can attend marmalade making workshops, a talk and tasting with Ivan Day and cooking demonstrations by Dan Lepard. Brill!
- Roasted nuts with soy sauce – unusual we know, but definitely worth a try if you like Chinese food. Just remember to make your pancakes a little thinner when you make this one.
What about traditional toppings?
Okay, not all of these are for everyone, but they are definitely worth a try if you are looking for something new this year. Alternatively, if you’d much rather stick to something more traditional – how about trying some of these:
We asked around the offices and all of these got the thumbs up:
- Banana and honey
- Blueberry jam and Greek yoghurt
- Apple sauce and cinnamon
- Peanut butter and strawberry jam
- Pineapple and papaya chunks in plain yoghurt
- Lemon curd and butter
- Clotted cream and strawberries
- Ice cream and chocolate sauce
- Warmed up marshmallows
- Squares of Galaxy (my personal fav – wrap the chocolate in the pancake and leave to melt)

So many people have sweet pancakes in the UK, as indeed I did growing up – flat on the plate with lemon juice and sugar or some syrup on top. However, after experiencing the joy of eating savoury pancakes abroad with cheese and ham in or with minced meat and sour cream, all folded over into a parcel shape, I only wish they were available in restaurants or cafés here
Great items from you, man. I have take note your stuff prior to and you are just too magnificent. I really like what you have received right here, certainly like what you’re stating and the way by which you say it. You are making it entertaining and you still care for to keep it sensible. I can’t wait to read far more from you. That is really a wonderful website.
